Nestled in the quiet heart of rural Devon, our floating pods drift within a recognised Dark Sky Zone, a place of true dark sky glamping in Devon, far from the wash of city light. Here, the absence of glare reveals what’s been hiding all along: a sky alive with constellations, where on clear nights the Milky Way spills softly across the horizon.
Discover stillness through Dark Sky glamping in Devon
Across much of the UK, true darkness has all but disappeared. Artificial lighting now obscures the Milky Way for around 77% of people, the stars replaced by an amber haze. Here, those constellations return in full clarity.
Lilypod sits on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, whose vast 954 km² of moorland holds some of the darkest skies in southern England. This natural shield from light pollution gives our lake its deep night canopy, one of the main reasons guests can see so many stars and we offer the best in dark sky glamping.
Dark skies aren’t just beautiful; they’re essential for balance, for both people and wildlife. Bats, insects, and birds all rely on natural light patterns to feed, migrate and rest. At Lilypod, we work to keep the night as nature intended: soft solar lighting only where needed, many of our lights are painted in gentle pink hues to reduce blue light which protects nocturnal rhythms both for you and the wildlife. The result is a space where the human and natural worlds can share the same calm darkness.
The Science of Awe.
Time beneath a star-filled sky does more than inspire wonder. Studies show that looking up at night can lower cortisol levels, help regulate sleep, and restore our natural sense of rhythm. Psychologists call it the “overview effect” a quiet shift in perspective that reminds us of our small but connected place in the wider universe.
At Lilypod, surrounded by open water and unspoilt sky, that effect feels tangible. There’s no Wi-Fi signal or screen glare, only the sound of the waterfall and the reflection of the cosmos across the lake. It’s less about escape and more about return: to natural light, natural dark, and a slower, steadier heartbeat.

Stargazing at Lilypod
From the deck of your floating pod, stars shimmer both above and below. On still nights, the mirrored surface of the lake creates a magical reflection as if the constellations themselves have drifted down to rest upon the water. Wrapped in a blanket beside the fire pit, many guests find themselves tracing Orion’s path across the lake long after midnight. It’s a moment of quiet connection few city skies can offer.
How to make the most of the night
Take your time and ease into the dark. Each pod has a torch, keep it close by and you’ll find soft blankets tucked away in the pull-out storage beneath the bed. Choose a comfortable spot to settle, the deck is perfect for this. When you’re ready, switch off the pod lights and let your eyes adjust. Twenty quiet minutes is all it takes for the stars to bloom. Keep your phone light low, or turn it off altogether, and let the dark wrap around you.
As winter draws in and the nights lengthen, the stargazing only gets better. The crisp air brings sharper visibility, and the early twilight means you can enjoy the constellations for longer. November through February is the most spectacular time to experience Devon’s dark skies, when the reflection of Orion, Taurus, and the Pleiades dances across the lake.

Celestial events to enjoy all year round
You can enjoy Lilypod’s dark skies in every season, there’s always something celestial to see. Whether you visit in midsummer or deep winter, the night sky holds its own rhythm of spectacle.
The Perseid Meteor Shower (August)
One of the most breathtaking meteor displays, with streaks of light crossing the sky at their peak in mid-August.
The Orionids (October)
Dust and debris from Halley’s Comet lighting up the night in quick, delicate flashes.
Winter Constellations (December–February)
Crisp, clear nights perfect for spotting Orion, Taurus, and the Pleiades mirrored on the lake.

Each event is best seen with patience, warmth, and quiet, the very qualities that make a stay at Lilypod so restorative.
Returning to Stillness
In a world that rarely pauses, true darkness has become a gift.
At Lilypod, night invites you to slow down, breathe deeper, and look up.
And in these long winter evenings, beneath Dartmoor’s vast dark sky, the stars will find you, twice reflected, softly gleaming- a quiet reminder that stillness isn’t the absence of life, but the space where life is most deeply felt.
This is dark sky glamping in Devon at its purest: where you don’t need perfection to feel wonder. It’s found instead in a shared laugh, the warmth of the fire, or the peace that comes when you finally stop rushing.
These are the moments that last, the kind that arrive quietly, and stay with you long after you leave.
And most importantly of all, don’t forget to make a wish. ✨
Hope to see you at the Lake, with warmth,
Kyle & Jenny
